The figurative ‘Decision Review System’ (DRS) is being referred to as Antigua and Barbuda Falcons coach Paul Nixon accused Cricket West Indies (CWI) of being ‘disrespectful and unprofessional’ after their loss against the Trinbago Knight Riders last Wednesday.
Last Wednesday, speaking to reporters after their loss to the TKR at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Nixon said CWI held back the true extent of all-rounder Justin Greaves’ ankle injury from the Falcons.
The Barbadian has not played a single match for the Falcons for the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season. The CPL started two days after the West Indies won the third One Day International against Pakistan to win the series 2-1, in which Greaves played a hand in the win.
A source close to the West Indies team revealed the coach was not being truthful in his assertions. The source added that all franchises, including the Falcons, were updated between the end of the West Indies-Pakistan series and the start of the CPL of all 15 of the West Indies squad members who were part of the series against Pakistan.
The source noted in Greaves’ situation, the physio of the Falcons knew, via the report, that Greaves had an injury concern. They also knew Greaves, who complained about the concern while on West Indies duty, still played him after West Indies coach Daren Sammy, after being informed about the injury, decided to use him as a batter.
The source noted that Greaves scored an unbeaten 43 from 24 balls and was sprinting between the wickets in the win against Pakistan two days before the start of the CPL, but did not bowl in the match.
The Falcons subsequently posted an official statement, apologising for the comments by the English coach. It stated, “We want to emphasise that there was no intention to offend or undermine the efforts of Cricket West Indies (CWI). Nixon totally regrets any and all remarks made.”
The Falcons continued, “Both Paul Nixon and the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons apologise for any unintended implications or offence these comments may have caused to CWI management and staff. We remain firmly committed to fostering a strong and collaborative partnership with CWI, one that is grounded in mutual respect and open, constructive dialogue to advance West Indies cricket.”The source revealed what he thought was a greater concern. He stated that since Greaves arrived at the Falcons, he had only had one physiotherapy session, adding that the Falcons had made him bowl recently without his ankle being taped.
Cricket West Indies has accepted the apology from the Falcons and Mr Nixon.
